Six students from Mountain View High School's Law Enforcement class participated in the 2nd Annual UIL Regional Police Skills Competition, recently held at the El Paso Community College Law Enforcement Academy on December 5, 2009. Schools from other districts such as Ysleta ISD, Clint ISD, El Paso ISD also participated in the events. Mountain View teacher, Danny Ramos, a Reserve Deputy Constable for the Precinct 2 Constable's Office, led his students to first, second, and third place medals. The students trained for approximately 5 weeks with the guidance of Mr. Ramos, Constable Rick Gammon Precinct 2, and Deputy Steve Porras from the Sheriff's Office.
The students participated in events such as:
- Felony Traffic Stops, Mountain View students (Marco and Mark Padilla) took 1st place; and students (Andy Ugarte and Samantha Ponce) took 2nd place.
- Routine Traffic Stops, Mountain View student (Leo Rodriguez) took 2nd place; and (Carlos Compean) took 3rd place.
- Obstacle Course, Mountain View student (Andy Ugarte) took 2nd place.
- Foot Pursuit, Mountain View student (Marco Nicholson) took 3rd place.
Such high achievements from these students, who worked so hard to perfect their skills, are extraordinary, given that it was Mountain View's first year to compete and Mr. Ramos is the only law enforcement instructor at Mountain View. The aforementioned students should be commended for their hard work, dedication to their law enforcement class and their pride in being a LOBO from Mountain View High School.
