Alternative Certification Programs
Alternative Certification Programs are designed for individuals who hold a college or university degree but do not hold a teaching certificate. If enrolled in an alternative certification program, the applicant has to have already passed the TExES content area exam(s) required for the position being applied for. The school district must ensure that individuals serving in positions requiring certification, must hold the appropriate Texas credentials issued by the Texas Education Agency.
Alternative certification programs (ACP's) offer a nontraditional route to certification that may allow you to teach while completing the requirements. These programs are located in universities, school districts, education service centers, community colleges, and private entities. There are numerous university-based and alternative certification programs. Visit the TEA website for more information on becoming a teacher through an ACP.
